This page is for those of you who are interested in supporting us, or who are just interested in looking under the hood of what a missionary budget looks like.
We believe that we are offering an opportunity to invest in God’s work (so we’d be proud to share with you about it), and as investors you should ask lots of hard questions before you buy in. (One of the reason’s for this page is to answer the question “where is my money going?”) Don’t feel obligated to give to us out of friendship, guilt, or because we’d starve. If God’s standard is cheerful givers (2 Corinthians 9:7), that’s good enough for us too. Pray and see if what we are doing is something you think God cares about and would have you cheerfully invest in.
What we really want to do is take your hearts with us to what we believe God is doing in Ethiopia. For, as the Bible says, “where the wallet goes, the heart follows.” (rough translation of Matthew 6:21).
Two Kinds of Support
One Time Costs
These are the costs of getting to Ethiopia and set up to effectively minister. We’ve broken them down into three different categories.
-Preparing: Training, resources and travel for support raising, immunizations, language study $8,400
-Moving: Travel to the field, baggage, visas, first month’s support $10,600
One Time Costs grand total: $28,493
Ongoing Monthly Support
We are hoping to serve in Ethiopia long term so the key way people and churches can support us is on an monthly basis. Our regular ongoing monthly budget is $4,456 per month, or about $53,500 per year. We don’t get to spend this any way we want however (that’s part of the accountability of being with SIM). Instead, our budget is broken down into the categories you can see on the graph.
Salary 44% This covers our regular personal expenses (like groceries) as well as our housing costs and taxes.
Insurance 16% Everyone knows how much this can cost, our includes medical evacuation insurance (which we hope to never use)
Home and Field Services 15% This helps support the fine folks with SIM who take care of government paperwork for us (like Visas), arrange our travel, answer our questions, cash our checks and mail year end tax deductible receipts to our donors, and manage all the other infrastructure that supports us as we serve.
Retirement 11% The non-profit version of a 401k.
Ministry Related Expenses 8% An expense account we can use to pay for various costs that come up while we are doing ministry.
Travel Expenses 6% This ensures that when we come home to visit with family and supporters (every 2 to 4 years) that we have the money for our plane tickets ready to go.
How Much Do You Need to Raise Before You Leave?
Simple answer 100% of both our one time and monthly support expenses. SIM is pretty firm on this, and we have come to agree. When we make it to Ethiopia we want to be serving there without the distraction of trying to finish raising support or pinching our pennies (or Ethiopian Birr) because we are short on funds. Instead, with 100% of our support promised on a monthly basis, when we get off the plane and are learning how to drive in Ethiopia, speak Amharic, and effectively serve in a new culture, money and support raising won’t be one of our problems.
